This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.

Part A: Curriculum music

Curriculum music lessons are informed by the Model Music Curriculum (non-statutory guidance for music teaching) and provide pupils with opportunities to:

Listen to and evaluate music from diverse time periods and cultures.

Learn how to create and control sound using their voices, as well as tuned and

untuned instruments.

Understand how music is communicated through various notation systems.

Improvise and compose music.

Perform musically in front of audiences of varying sizes.

All classes have 45 minutes to 1 hour of whole class music teaching per week.

Weekly 30 minute singing assemblies for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 and musical workshops are also delivered by the Windsor Learning Partnership’s Director of Music.

Part B: Co-curricular music

At Dedworth Green First School, we have a range of opportunities which enrich our pupil’s musical education outside of their classroom:

After school Choir club is open to all Key Stage 2 children to develop their vocals. The choir provides a range of opportunities for our pupils to perform at school events and around the local community for example Christmas Carol concerts. They will also have the amazing experience of singing along with other pupils around the country at Young Voices which is a concert at the O2 arena in London with a live orchestra.

As part of our outdoor provision in Early Years the children have access to a range of musical instruments to help encourage and inspire a love of music. During whole class lessons, the children also learn a wide range of nursery rhymes and songs to help support other areas of their learning from Maths, phonics and speaking and listening skills.

Working in partnership with the music team at Dedworth Middle School, our pupils have the opportunity to learn from older pupils and utilise the designated music space that the Middle School can provide.

Part C: Musical experiences

This is about all the other musical events and opportunities that we organise, such as singing in assembly, concerts and shows, and trips to professional concerts.

At Dedworth Green First School, our aim is to create a curriculum that is rich with a range of experiences for our pupils. We believe it is important for children to have a large cultural capital so that they can draw upon experiences to help inspire their creativity.

  • Weekly singing assemblies help the children develop skills to sing as an ensemble.
  • Trips such as the Young Voices concert, Lanternfest and the Christmas Carol concert allow the children to show case their talents to the whole school community and beyond.
  • Pick-up performances are held regularly at the end of the school day to showcase the songs that pupils have been learning in school.
  • Windsor Learning Partnership Performances provide children with a platform to demonstrate what they have learnt to their parents and the wider community.
  • End of year musical productions and leavers assemblies for Year 4 provide the pupils with opportunities to learn a range of singing skills such as rounds and harmonies.

In the future

At Dedworth Green First School, we want to provide our pupils with the opportunities to fulfil their potential. In the future, we aim to:

  • Provide further school performances and special music events
  • Build better links with families to enable better support for music development.
  • Promote a love of music though exposure of different live performances in school.
  • Continue to signpost external family events to support parents with musical learning.
  • Ensure support is offered to families who are eligible for Pupil Premium funding so that pupils have fair access to clubs and trips.

The Department for Education publishes a guide for parents and young people on how they can get involved in music in and out of school, and where they can go to for support beyond the school.
