Year 4

Dear parents,

Next summer there will be an important times tables test coming up for all Year 4 children in England. Please read the following information. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/multiplication-tables-check-information-for-parents

Welcome to Year Four!

Autumn Term 2 Information (From October to December 2022)

Teacher: Mrs Issitt

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Gatehouse

We are really looking forward to this next term and have some great topics on the agenda, including: a portal story and discussion writing in English, area and multiplication in Maths, digestion, teeth, (predator and prey) in Science, climate in Geography, clothing in French, Lichtenstein in Art, jumping and landing in PE, rock and roll in Music and Christmas in RE.

Please can children bring homework books in every Monday, we will aim to have these back to you for Thursday. The children can choose from one activity per week from the grid attached. I would like to encourage the children to ensure this is presented neatly, in pencil and using a full date and title. Children will have a list of words to learn each week, we would encourage them to write these out at home and learn to use them within the context of sentences as well. These words are from the statutory Year 4 list as well as other words with similar spelling patterns. The children will be tested on these words on a Monday.

Reading

We love echo reading in year 4 and do this at least twice a week as a whole class. We aim to hear all children read each week. We would ask that all children read at home at least 15 minutes a night and that children bring a completed reading record in each night. I would ask that reading records are bought in every morning and placed on Mrs Gatehouse's desk so that she can record that reading has been completed. There is a lot of evidence to show that children who read with their parents or carers each day have a far greater depth of understanding of the English vocabulary. Reading unlocks the curriculum even further for children. There is also significant evidence that reading a bedtime story to your child causes substantial development within the brain and aids in their comprehension and word knowledge.

Spelling and Times Tables

We will test children on their spellings each Monday and their times tables will be tested every Friday. These scores will be recorded.

English

Please write a book review (fiction) and include:

Book Title, Author, a paragraph about the plot, the main characters, and a paragraph on what you enjoyed about this book. Do a little research on the author and provide some details about them too.

In your book review, I would also like you to draw a picture of the front cover.

Maths

Can you display the 6,7 and 8 times tables in a really fun and unique way. Perhaps you could design a poster or paint the times tables. Perhaps you could draw a picture with the times tables included within it. For example you could draw a brick wall with the times tables embedded within it or a rocket ship with the times tables incorporated. I am asking you to do these three times tables as they are often the most tricky to remember.

RE

In RE we are learning about the role of Mary in the Christmas story.

I would like you to design a traditional Christmas card with Mary, Joseph, the angels, shepherds, Wise Men and baby Jesus included. Be as creative as you can. You can simply design the front of the card on a piece of paper and stick it into your book.

Science

In Science we are learning about teeth and digestion. I would like you to do some research about keeping your teeth healthy. Include details about how long you should brush for, how many times a day, what happens to the acid levels in your mouth when you snack, perhaps some statistics about teeth from some UK data. Please design a poster in a really fun and unique way, outlining the main points and including pictures.

Geography

In Geography we are learning about weather and climates.

I would like you to do some research about a country in the world and state what the climate is like there. Also, provide some facts about the country like population, capital city, details about their flag, currency and how far away it is from the United Kingdom. Present your findings in a really fun way. State which is the hottest month of the year and which is the coldest.

French

I want you to imagine that you are going on holiday to somewhere really cold. Make a list of items that you will take in French. Draw and label these items in your book, don’t forget to include some detail about their colour too!

We would ask that children use Times Tables Rockstars in order to learn their times tables at home. The 'Soundcheck' facility will provide a format which is the same as the times tables test, which is a national test, in June 2023.

Meet the Teacher: please take a look at this PowerPoint from September 2022

Year 3 and 4 words. Children will need to learn all of them by the end of Year 4.
